4 Cruise Ship Mae Kok River

Travel along Kok River
Travel along Kok River
Rafting Along the Mae Kok River, lots of opportunities for rafting both along the Mekong and Mae Kok rivers. The Mekong, one of Asia's mightiest rivers, begins in Tibet and flows some 4,500 kilometres eventually into the South China Sea. The Mekong can be explored from Chiang Saen by an exhilarating 3-hour boat trip downstream to Chiang Khong, or, far more sedately, from Sop Ruak.

The 130-km-long Mae Kok is one of the most scenic and unspoilt rivers in Thailand. Rafting trips are often combined with "inland" excursions, like elephant trekking to hilltribe villages. You can take a short trip or cover longer distances, staying at local villages on route.

6 Elephant Riding & Hill Tribe Trekking

Trekking Tour Chiang Rai
Trekking Tour Chiang Rai
Riding on elephant's back is one of the exciting activity and you should not miss because you will not only taste the adventurous ride but also have a good opportunity to explore the jungle. For more information please contact your travel agency.

As Chiang Rai has a lot of mountains and hilltribe villages of all major groups, there are many areas good for trekking, e.g. Doi Tung, Doi Mae Salong, Doi Pa Tang and the banks along the Mae Kok River. Many travel agencies and hotels offer trekking packages with experienced guides. Prices, which include guide, meals, transportation and accommodation, normally depend on the number of days and number of participants (the more people, the cheaper price per person). Trekking alone or with unauthorized tour guide is not recommended, even though you have a route map.

Trekking is one of the biggest attractions for travellers in Chiang Rai. The opportunity to get out into the jungle on foot or on an elephant is something that goes hand in hand with a trip to Thailand. Treks vary in length and challenge. Itineraries vary a little, but as a general rule, a two- to three-day trek will include:
a) Trekking in the mountains;
b) A boat trip and an elephant safari, which means some time out on a river and a jungle trek on an elephant;
c) Treks by foot into the jungle;
d) Visits to Akha, Karen, Lisu and Lahu tribe villages;
e) Overnight stops in villages.

On these trips the tour guide should be well experienced, but do not expect to see anything dramatic. Over the years trekking has become fairly standardised, but nonetheless an enjoyable experience. The villagers have become very used to foreigners arriving, taking photos and getting back into their minibus or walking off on their way to the next village. It does no harm to buy some of their produce or craft. Some of the more enterprising villagers will be keen to have a photo taken on the premise that you will give them some money.
